Happy Birthday, Kurt Vonnegut

You would be hard-pressed to convince me that anyone says anything better than Kurt Vonnegut did in his writing. Here are a few of my favorites:

"Those that believe in telekinetics, raise my hand."

"There's only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it, you've got to be kind."

"There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too."

"That is my principal objection to life, I think: It's too easy, when alive, to make perfectly horrible mistakes."

"I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center."

"If you can do a half-assed job of anything, you're a one-eyed man in a kingdom of the blind."

"Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward."

"We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be."

And this, in response to the question "Why bother?":

"Many people need desperately to receive this message: 'I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.'"

You are not alone.

Here's a wonderful little lecture about the shape of stories.

  1. i figured out how to "follow" yer thing without me having to click on it every time....feeling accomplished. :D yay!

  2. Love these quotes. I needed this for my Monday morning blues!

    1. They made me feel better, too! I think I'm going to have to reread these often.

  3. While I am sort of semi-indifferent to George Clooney (I know!) I love and adore Kurt Vonnegut. Love this post.

    1. As much as I love George, I'd probably take Kurt over him any day of the week.
